Second Annual John Hatch FaithHealth Lecture Series

Conetoe, North Carolina

The Division of FaithHealth Ministries at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and the East Carolina University (ECU) Department of Public Health invite you to the Second Annual John W. Hatch FaithHealth Lecture Series on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 from 10 am until 3:30 pm at Conetoe Missionary Baptist Church.  The church is located at 200 S Railroad St, Conetoe, NC. The Series, named as a commemoration of the pioneering work of Dr. John Hatch in the areas of faith, health, and community organization, seeks to:

• Provide a forum for participants to engage in diverse streams of intellectual knowledge gained through individuals, communities and institutions that are relevant to the fields of faith and health.
• Create opportunities for open dialogue, story sharing, and innovation between faith and health communities towards the goal of improved quality of life in the communities/populations served.
• Build stronger communities vested in bridging the space between the healing worlds of faith and health.

“The Hatch Lecture” will again engage faith and health leaders in dynamic and thought provoking dialogue reflective of the strength of faithhealth intersections in improving population health and building stronger communities. The keynote lecturer will be Rev. Richard Joyner, Pastor of Conetoe Baptist Church and a top 10 CNN Hero. Rev. Joyner founded Conetoe Family Life Center and led the efforts to build a community garden (yielding 50,000 lbs. of food a year) and beekeeping operation. These achievements continue to make a significant impact on the youth and families in the community.Rev. Joyner will be joined by one of his partners in the faithhealth mission, Dr. Paul Cunningham, 163^rd President of the North Carolina Medical Society and immediate past Dean of the ECU Brody School of Medicine.

Dr. John Hatch will provide more stories on his legendary work encompassing congregational health programs that also engaged academic centers and serving as community organizer for the first rural community health center in the US. Dr. H. Jack Geiger, Medical Director/Founder of the Center, will join Dr.  Hatch as they share accounts of their journey in rural Mississippi where the Center successfully leveraged social determinants/drivers of health in a sustained manner.

Lunch will be served in the church fellowship hall (look for farm to table favorites from the Conetoe Garden) followed by a Response Panel comprised of experts leading current efforts to address health disparities and build on the strengths of communities in today’s complex environment. Weather permitting, the day will close with a tour of the Conetoe Farm.
