Hi Friends: Well, Easter has come and gone and Spring is finally here. Hoping you are enjoying the greenery and lush flowers blooming in our beautiful NC.
We are pleased to have our annual presentations from our Chaplain Fellows and their Supervisor, Chaplain Jissan, presenting on Wed. April 26, 2023 at 9 a.m. on Zoom (see link below). This year we’ll be hearing from Chaplains Jeffrey Dennis and Clay Gomez.
Jeffrey will be sharing about his powerful experiences working with our AHWFB Palliative Care Team, while Clay is getting up early to be with us from his new location and job in Colorado, sharing about his work on the behavioral health unit and with translational care. Jeffrey will share more in-depth descriptions of his work, which is focused on “Holistic Care for Palliative Care At-Home Patients.” Clay will share how he brought mindfulness meditation techniques to patients in the adult behavioral unit. His presentation will include some of the research on mindfulness, the two different meditation groups formed with patients of Sticht 1, precautions to take into consideration when working with this population, the limitations of the project, and some limited qualitative data from the groups.
Jeffrey Dennis is a resident of Kernersville, NC and has been married for twenty-five years to his wonderful wife, Frederica. They have a twenty-three-year-old daughter, Jasmine, a 2022 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and currently, a dental student at UNC’s Adams School of Dentistry.
Educationally, Jeffrey holds a Bachelor of Science in Religion, a Master of Arts in Religion: Leadership, a Master of Divinity: Chaplaincy, and a Doctor of Ministry, Leadership from Liberty University. Professionally, Jeffrey has worked in the Telecommunication and IT industry for twenty-five years. In addition, he has been a bi-vocational minister. As a Baptist minister, he was licensed in 2001 and ordained in 2004. In 2011, he completed a Chaplain Summer Intern Unit at Alamance Regional Medical Center. In August 2022, he completed a Chaplain Residency at Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He has been the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Chaplain Fellow for the Palliative Care team since August 2022.
Clay Gomez was the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Chaplain Fellow for Adult Behavioral Care and also our Transitional Care. He recently began a job as Chaplain at Colorado Children’s Hospital Colorado Springs, CO. He trained as a Buddhist Chaplain at the Upaya Zen Center in Santa Fe, NM under the direction of Roshi Joan Halifax. He completed his CPE internship and residency at AHWFBMC and recently submitted his BCCI board certification materials and hopes to have his provisional certification soon. He joins us today from Colorado Springs, happy to be back in the city where his two grown daughters also live.
