On Sunday National Public Radio ran a story about a statue in North Carolina that some love and some don’t. “Jesus the Homeless” was created by Canadian sculptor Timothy Schmalz. Listen to the story and get more information here.

The bronze statue was recently installed on the property of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson. The NPR photo above shows Rev. David Buck, rector of the church. Jesus is depicted as covered in a blanket on a park bench. We know who he is only by the crucifixion holes in his feet.

Buck told NPR’s John Burnett, “It gives authenticity to our church. This is a relatively affluent church, to be honest, and we need to be reminded ourselves that our faith expresses itself in active concern for the marginalized of society.”

Other copies of the statue will be installed in Chicago, Washington, D.C., and (if Rome approves) near the Vatican.
