Faith Community Nurses and their constituents are important responders to those living with substance misuse or entering recovery. Using a case study, Dr. Corey Richardson will engage participants in discussion regarding the brain science of substance use disorders to dispel myths and stigma in communities of faith. Nurses need to be aware of the most current opioid statistics, the brain science of substance use disorders, signs and symptoms of different drug use, diagnostic tools, levels of care, treatment models, medication assisted treatment, and rescue Narcan.
Pastor Don Ledbetter will discuss the 12-step model(s) as a tool for Faith Communities to provide spiritual direction, behavior modification, and recovery support for persons and families struggling with substance use disorders.
